Hello GTL! September is here– the summer is winding down and fall is on its way.

GTL General Updates

This Week –
  • NEW GTL LINKERS ALERT! Learn more about our new Linkers Zhengyang and Nhi below.
  • Linkers Rebecca and Chantal completed a Learner Report for a Learner and their family!
  • Linker Kudana sent post Learning Companion service reflection to a Learner he worked with over the span of four weeks!
  • Linkers Thato and Kudana interviewed a new Learner on Tuesday. Woohoo!
  • Linker Rebecca finished up two programs with two different Learners and will be starting up another Learner Marathon with a new Learner soon. Great work!
  • The GTL Newsletter is looking for submissions!!
    • Send in blog posts, activities you’re involved in, poetry, art, interesting articles, cool opportunities; etc. Reply to this email with your ideas.   
  • Linker Chantal is working on a program plan for one of our Learners, they’ll be getting started soon!
  • Linker Zhengyang is working on creating a new video for the GTL website.
  • Monthly GTL Community Events — keep a lookout for monthly programming and events for Learners, Linkers, and the greater GTL community!!

  • Mental Health Awareness – a new GTL initiative. Linkers Annie and Rebecca are passionate about mental health and are in the beginning stages of creating a space and dialogue for all things relating to mental health.

GTL’s Learner Marathon service offers intensive curricula custom-tailored to each of our student’s goals.

From preparing for college entrance exams to skill development, the Learning Companion services are more than tutoring but also active application of curricula designed to improve student’s skills.

New GTL Linkers

Linker Project Manager: Zhengyang Huang 

I am a new media artist currently based in Los Angeles and an MFA graduate from UCLA, Design Media Arts. I’ve been working on self-directed art and design projects for several years. My work deals with a variety of media and techniques, such as interface designs, web-based interaction, speculative designs, 3D playable programs, and video production. I think, research, and make work about our presence in the rapidly restructuring topography of technology.

Interests: interdisciplinary art practice; speculative research and designs on software, interfaces, and technologies in our data-driven reality; web, game, interactive design; video making; object making, installation/space design; I like to go to galleries and museums every so often for new shows

Fun Fact: I am a twin and I collaborate with my brother, Zhengzhou Huang. We work as an artist group making objects, interfaces, and imaginary systems. We are currently working on topics such as digital bodies and performative software.

Why GTL: I am really interested in becoming a member of the learning community that GTL’s built and held to its core values. I identify myself as a self-learner and collaborator, and I am eager to learn new skills and cultivate new ideas through collaborative thinking and making. I worked as a teaching assistant during my time at UCLA and was a visiting lecturer teaching a summer course on motion design and video making in UCLA. I am excited to build interesting learning sessions and make meaningful designs in GTL’s community.

Hi, my name is Nhi Nguyen. I live in Boston, MA with my family. I’m currently a senior student at Massart Design. I’m thrilled to be a member of GTL and hope that I can share my experiences and inspirations with everybody to establish their goals.

Stress Management by Hunton Warren

Get Moving

One great way to help reduce stress is to get moving. Physical activity releases endorphins that make you feel good and in turn reduce stress. While a huge cause of stress is not having enough time to get things done and adding exercise to the daily To-Do list can seem overwhelming, exercise comes in many forms. You don’t have to go to the gym for an hour every day, you can simply take a walk around the block, a trip or two up and down the stairs, or even dance to your favorite music!

WEBINAR: Intersectionality of Race & Gender

Linkers Maya and Rebecca have prepared a webinar about the Intersectionality of Race and Gender to celebrate the diversity of humanity and the many ways our identities interact and intersect.

This presentation discusses:

  • the definition and importance of intersectionality
  • the impact of racial and sexual minority status on education
  • how equality disguises inequity
  • the ways in which stereotypes about race and gender can affect people

Hispanic Heritage Month

While officially beginning on September 15, we wanted to highlight historical figures of Hispanic descent as well as key historical events to honor the rich cultures and diverse communities of Hispanic peoples.

15 Facts About National Hispanic Heritage Month You Should Know In 2021

1. National Hispanic Heritage Month begins on September 15 and ends on October 15.
2. In June 1968, California Congressman George E. Brown first introduced Hispanic Heritage Week to commemorate the contributions of Hispanic and Latino Americans, according to History.com.

3. In 1987, U.S. Representative Esteban E. Torres of California proposed expanding the week-long observance to a month. He wanted more time to allow the nation to “properly observe and coordinate events and activities to celebrate Hispanic culture and achievement.”4. In 1988, Senator Paul Simon (D-Illinois), submitted a similar bill that successfully passed Congress. President Ronald Reagan signed the bill into law on August 17, 1988.

5. President George H.W. Bush was the first president to declare the 31-day period from September 15 to October 15 as National Hispanic Heritage Month. (Bonus fact: He was a sponsor of the original 1968 Hispanic Heritage Week resolution while serving in the House of Representatives.)
